First study Seller University. All of it. Pay special attention to sourcing.
Avoid Alibaba -- the counterfeit capital of the internet.
Attend a trade show. Find items that you understand and that interest you. Find your supplier contacts there.
Do not attempt to compete with everyone and their dog buying the same stuff from Alibaba.
