Textbook Sellers help please. Counterfeit Textbook characteristics, signs, print quality

Those of you who sell alot of textbooks, how do you determine if a textbook is counterfeit or just a bad printing job by the publisher? Does it seem some companies (Cengage, pearson, mcgraw, wiley) have better printing quality than others (sage, rutledge, some of the newer cengage also has lesser quality) Have you had any experience with alot of counterfeit coming from former Amazon rentals or just a lesser quality of book? Thanks for any insight you have in navigating this gauntlet.

"how do you deermine if a textbook is counterfeit or just a bad printing job by the publisher?"

From almost everything I have read on here so many publishers have gated or whitelisted their offers that anyone even attempting to sell a textbook (new or used) without having the permission of the publisher is running a very real risk of suspension.

By the nature of your question, I would suggest ignoring Amazon entirely for those books and going to eBay. It's a lot safer than here!

Google "Stop Counterfeit Textbooks" and you'll find a lot of the things to look for.

My record is at one booksale, spotting six books that I was fairly sure were counterfeit, even without having a legit copy of the same title to compare.

Personally, it's become a moot point, as I can't get approved to sell most of the best textbooks; and the market for them is a mere shadow of what it was just a few years ago.

Sometimes the cover will say to look for the authenticity sticker, and there will be a little foil seal on the back. Otherwise printing quality, graphics, etc. should tell you.

ISBN/UPC doesn't match on inauthentic books. The size of a counterfeit is somewhat bigger or smaller than the authentic copy. The texture of the cover may feel different, the ones that seem to absorb oil from fingerprints. On some publication manuals that I found a few years ago, there were spelling errors on the page with the ISBN. Each counterfeit book is unique in how it is counterfeited, but those are the easiest ways for me to spot them.

I have been sketched out by a few. I have found it helpful to scroll on the image of its listing on Amazon, and check to see if you can check the inside of the book online. This has helped me determine if a few are real or not.

If you are selling new textbooks, I would hope your distributor isn't sending you counterfeits. If you are selling used textbooks, go to Booksrun counterfeit checker. Just Google it. You will find it. I can't post the URL here.

You sweat over it like your life depends on it, because it does, and expect the lawyers to make mistakes and file IP complaints on books you sourced directly from pearson.com even, because they're human too and overly-aggressive. Worse than DC comic bad guys to tell you the truth.

Hi there @Seller_juBskO15vEVTx,

These response from other sellers should be very helpful to identify possible counterfeits. Another step you can do is to ensure you have good sourcing of your inventory. Being able to trace the providence of your units is crucial to ensuring you have authentic product. Good luck selling and have a great day.
