Without paying a lawfirm for a search, which will cost you $ and they will let you know if they cannot find any design or utility patents on the item . The attorneys will also make sure to say that there is always a possiblity that they missed a registration and therefore cannot really be held accountable should an infiringement occur :-)

That being said, you can begin by looking to see if the item is sold by anyone else. If so, then locate their company name and address and plug it into the USPTO Patent database.. Also, throw the image of the product into an image search engine for any similar items. If any pop up that even slightly resemble yours then you should do the same thing as initially recommeded.
